Sunday, August 21: Tots-n-Tunes at Seattle Center

I’m getting really excited for Tots-N-Tunes at Seattle Center‘s Mural Amphitheater on Sunday, August 21! Not only will all six Kindiependent bands be there, but so will award-winning, critically adored family indie musician Justin Roberts!

I’m particularly excited for this event because I’ll also be playing drums for Recess Monkey as their drummer will be out of town. Luckily I already know most of the songs because their latest album and YouTube channel are on constant repeat at the Bischoff household. I did have one condition for doing the sub gig… that Garner’s favorite song “Marshmallow Farm” be on the set list.

11-11:30 Caspar Babypants

11:45-12:15 Harmonica Pocket

12:30-1:00 Johnny Bregar & the Country Dawgs (me!)

1:15-1:45 Justin Roberts and the NR4NP

2-2:30 The Not-Its!

2:45-3:15 Board of Education

3:30-4:00 Recess Monkey (me again!)

Tickets: Kids are FREE. Grownups are $10 each

Northwest Folklife Festival

We had a great time today at the Northwest Folklife Festival playing with the Bregar/Ahearnes on the ferry and playing with Johnny on the Fountain Lawn Stage. All six Kindiependent bands played (The Harmonica Pocket, Board of Education, Recess Monkey, us, The Not-Its and Caspar Babypants). Highlights of the day were meeting all of the other bands, seeing The Not-Its (and Hank!) for the first time, and having Chris Ballew (Caspar himself and singer for the Presidents of the United States of America) join us for our whole set.

Folklife!

Hey families! Come to Northwest Folklife Festival at Seattle Center on Monday, May 30 (that’s Memorial Day) and see Johnny Bregar and the Country Dawgs rock the Fountain Lawn! And for an extra-special treat, we have Chris Ballew (singer for the Presidents of the United States of America, aka “Caspar Babypants”) joining us on back-up instruments and vocals. It’s gonna be sweet! We play at 1:15p.m. and are just one of six Kindiependent bands playing Monday morning/afternoon.

See you there!

Conundrum 2011 is almost here!

It’s just a little over a week until Conundrum 2011. Every year we top ourselves and this year will be no different. If you’ve never been, this event is the culmination of a year’s worth of work for each of my students. It gives each drummer a chance to show their feats in front of a supportive audience filled with friends and families while up on a real stage, with real lights, being backed by real professional musicians. My students have pushed the envelope again this year with song selections from bands as diverse as The Beach Boys, My Chemical Romance, Nirvana, Dizzy Gillespie, Green Day, and Maroon 5. Some of these drummers have been playing for years, and others only for a couple of months.

I have a few treats for the audience this year too! There is going to be a ROCK STAR COSTUME CONTEST with prizes for best student costume and best audience costume (child AND adult categories). All that plus getting treated to the sounds of Jherek Bischoff and Johnny Bregar backing these kids up.

I’ve set up a page specifically for Conundrum. I’ll start to keep an archive of videos and photos as people post them to YouTube.

Bainbridge Kids Show!

I am super excited to announce that I’m playing with Johnny Bregar and the Country Dawgs at the Treehouse CafĂ© on Bainbridge Island on Sunday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m. I’ve yet to play this hot new venue on the island. It’s just a short walk from my house AND the show will be over by nap time. What could be better? If you’ve got kids and live on Bainbridge, I expect to see you there!

Ambient Orchestral Goodness

Tomorrow night is the big show of my brother’s orchestral music with a 35-person group performing the pieces. Our rehearsal on Tuesday was filled with inspired new ambient classical works and Saturday’s show should be even more exciting as the new special reverb unit (that mimics the unique sonic abilities of Fort Worden’s cistern) he has commissioned will be in place to take the music to a completely new level. I definitely recommend checking the show out if you can.

Orchestral Show!

In a couple of weeks I’ll be rejoining my brother, dad, and about 25 other musicians onstage to perform a collection of orchestral pieces composed by my brother. The last time we did something like this was with a 55-person orchestra playing Jherek’s compositions at Seattle’s Town Hall in honor of Jherek’s 30th birthday.

The show at the Chapel Performance Space in Wallingford will most likely sell out, so get there well before the 8:00 start time on February 19! Find the space on the fourth floor of the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave. N).

I hope to see you there!

Here are details from the Facebook event page:

NIGHT ONLY!
On February 19th, Jherek will be premiering a collection of ten ambient pieces composed during a recent residency at Port Townsend’s Fort Warden State Park. These pieces were specifically written for and recorded in the Park’s Cistern — an empty, two million gallon, underground water tank, boasting unique acoustic properties which produce an incredible, 45-second reverb decay. For this one-time musical event, Jherek will be joined by a live orchestra, as well as sound engineers, to help recreate the incredible reverb and ambience of the Cistern in surround sound.

First gig with Johnny Bregar

Yesterday was my first gig with Johnny Bregar and the ______________ (we’re days from having a new name). We played in the UW Bookstore/Top Pot in Mill Creek. I didn’t really know what to expect and was a little nervous just to be on “stage” for the first time with 4 other people I’d never gigged with before. Wow! What a show. It didn’t matter that kids are a forgiving crowd, we hit it. It went really fast and we had to skip a song or two. The best part was looking out and seeing my kids singing along.
